Gracie Allen, a one-time vaudeville actress and wife of George Burns, was
famous for her pranks. One day, a friend returned the favor and sent Gracie
a small box. Inside was a baby alligator, wriggling and snapping, but still
too small to do much harm. Gracie was heading out the door at the moment, so
she put the baby alligator in the bathtub and left for the day. Upon
returning home that day, she found a note from her maid on the counter. It
read, "I quit, I don’t work in no house
with an alligator. I should have told you this when I started, but I never
thought it would come up”.
In our
lives, there are many issues we thought would
"never come up" or at least
never be a reason of contention for us. But, is it not the "little
alligators" of stress, unresolved issues, unanswered prayers, strained
relationships, etc…that leave us wanting to say, “I
quit!” Or, ironically, it is when nothing's happening and the
days stretch on in dreary tedium that we find ourselves wanting to leave a
note simply stating, "I have had enough,
I quit!"
Simon
Peter admonishes us in 2 Peter 1:5, “For
this very reason make effort to add to your faith PERSEVERANCE”.
The word he uses for perseverance is
hyponmone, which means STAND YOUR GROUND - Maintain your position
- Stick to your guns. Peter knew what it felt like to quit, for he had
resigned that fateful night in the garden when Christ needed him the most.
Peter adamantly says…Trust me on this one - I have been on both sides of the
fence - Stay in the game-Don’t quit, not now. The rewards, blessings and
self-gratification that come from knowing you stayed at your post far
outweigh the remorse, regret and hindsight when you flee - Time will pass
and the season will too - You will be glad you held on. Alligators or
not…it’s too soon too quit.
"Hold Your Ground!"
