"Stop cursing the darkness and start lighting some candles..."
-Unknown
Living in this 21st century world, there is one thing we cannot
deny. Darkness is real, it is all around us. We see the effects of darkness
- hopelessness, insurmountable circumstances, disease and fear - eclipse the
light of hope in the lives of those around us. Let me ask you something…
when you walk into a dark room, has focusing on the darkness ever made the
light come on? No, is absolutely the right answer. I imagine, if you are
like me, you can remember one time or another that you did exactly that,
when you were trying to help someone overcome spiritual darkness. Only to
have those attempts result in darkness being magnified while the light
remained hidden.
"God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.” (I John 1:5).
What if we began to concentrate on walking in His light until we illuminated
the "dark corners" of those around us? Yes, there are people all around the
world that are desperate. What about the people closest to you? What if this
day you and I concentrated on lighting candles of hope, forgiveness,
kindness, help, concern and joy? Unfortunately, we are distracted by bowing
to the god of self-obsession, resulting in our focus being on me, myself and
I. The paradox is the darkness in our own lives only grows the more we
concentrate on it. Howbeit, the darkness in us diminishes as we shed His
light on someone else, bringing them much needed relief in their "dark
midnight" of the soul! Eliminating darkness, one light at a time…
“As we obey this commandment, to love one another, the darkness in our lives
disappears and the new light of life of Christ shines in…” I John 2:8 TLB
