"Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength,
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint."
Isaiah 40:31
David Hubbard, an Old Testament scholar said we must learn to live these
words-soaring, running and walking-"one line at a time". What does that mean?
Isaiah says that for those who wait on the Lord a time will come when you will
mount and soar on wings of eagles. Eagles are one of the only birds that are
capable of soaring. They have been clocked at up to 80 mph without flapping at
all, they soar on invisible columns of rising air. In a season of soaring, God
is answering prayers with lavish benevolence, using you in ways that leave you
astonished, giving you power to make your life productive and flooding you with
strength beyond your ability. You are soaring with the spirit.
However, there is another line in Isaiah’s description. There will also be
seasons when you are not soaring. But you will be able to run and not grow weary.
During this season, you don’t see alot of miracles. But with persistence and
determination you know you are running the race. You feel frustration, and at
the same time God’s pleasure with your obedience. You must keep running,
faithfully obeying, serving, giving, and praying. Do not compare yourself with
someone who is soaring right now. Your time will come. Just keep running!
Then there is a third description that Isaiah describes. There will be times
that you will not soar and you cannot run because of doubt, pain, fatigue or
failure. In those times, all we can do is to walk and not faint. During this
season, to end a day knowing we made it from point A to point B without
fainting, is indeed an accomplishment. All we can do during these times is to
say, "God, I don’t feel fruitful or productive and I don’t feel triumphant. But
I won’t let go. I will obey you. I'll just keep walking.” Sometimes walking is
all we can do. But it is just a matter of time and you will soar again.
After meditating on these words, I have arrived at a conclusion about my own
life, as I am sure you will as well. In every season of my life, God was
gracious to give me sovereign, unexpected, gracious "moments of soaring". Those
small but powerful moments enabled me, with His strength, to continue regardless
of the season I was in.
My prayer
for you is that whatever "season of waiting" that you are in, you will remember
that you are dearly loved by the Father. You are not forgotten nor are you
forsaken by Him. It is not over for you! My cry to the Father is that He will
divinely interrupt your life with sovereign moments of His undeniable presence
that will cause you to soar above the day. Until your season changes, wait on
the Lord! He WILL
renew your strength. |
