The reticular activating system in the brain is amazing. How does it work? Your
R.A.S. carves an image that once seen, continually seeks to match that image to
something else. Think about it for a moment. Have you ever bought a new car,
maybe an odd color of green? Okay, maybe not green, but think of a new car you
purchased thinking that it was the "only one of its kind". Then, what a
surprise, while driving through town you begin to see dozens of cars just like
it. Why? Because now your brain has a match, and you instantly notice what you
did not notice before.
Why the lesson on the brain? Because we attempt in our finite thinking to scan
our experiences, our encounters, and our relationships to find a match to who
God is. We even try to grasp some sense of who God is by taking the best version
of ourselves and projecting that image to the Nth degree. Then we factor in all
the goodness we can perceive and call that image "God”. God is not merely
the best version of you that you can think of. What an injustice we serve
ourselves and others when we make God like us. There has never been one just
like Him, neither will there ever be one after Him. He is in a class all by
Himself. He is far more above and beyond what we can perceive. It is this God,
who not only loves you immeasurably, but it is this God who orchestrates the
affairs of your life. Simple, yes…but definitely profound!
“To whom can the holy God be compared? Is there anyone else like him?” TEV-Isaiah
