It is my honor to have Todd Haggard, a member of our church, author this
morning’s manna.
“Is it well with you?” We often greet
each other with a similar greeting asking, “How are you today?” The
variety of answers we give can be as different as the people who ask us. In 2
Kings, we find the Shunamite woman in a similar situation. Gehazi, the servant
of Elisha, goes out to greet her at the request of the prophet to ask, “Is it
well with you?” Her reply; “It is well”. If you know the story, you
know all was not well from a human perspective as her only son had just
breathed his last breath.
History records another individual that has a similar
story. His name was Horatio Spafford and he lost a son as well, but his story
doesn’t stop there. About this time, he had also heavily invested in real
estate only to lose most of it in the Chicago Fire of 1871. Two years later,
looking toward a mission’s trip in Great Britain, he sent his family ahead of
him a day early. The boat they were on sank; his wife survived but he lost his
four daughters to the sea. If you were then asked, “How are you today”,
how would you respond? On the way to the sight of the sinking, Horatio penned
the words to the classic hymn we now know as “It is Well with My Soul”. Truly
amazing.
Many are the challenges each one of us face today. So
often the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Do we deny life’s
struggles? No. Is heart ache and discouragement going to come? Yes. But do we
have a Savior who causes us to overcome? Absolutely! Just like those before
us, when we find ourselves in these situations, we can begin to declare and
speak over our own selves “It is Well with My Soul” until it truly is.
“When peace like a rive, attendeth my
way, when sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my
soul.”
