The
place was Hollywood, California. The woman’s name was Henrietta Mears.
Miss Mears taught the college-aged singles at her church, Hollywood
Presbyterian Church. Henrietta became frustrated that she was not able
to give her students first rate material to educate them. So what did
this single woman do? She sensed God’s desire for the education of the
students and was moved to action in a "cause" greater than herself.
Henrietta began a small publishing enterprise out of her garage. It grew
into Gospel Light Publishers, one of the most effective publishers of
its day.
Henrietta then became frustrated because she was aware of the fact that
so many Christians living in crowded Los Angeles needed a place to
withdraw and be with God outdoors where they could hear him better. She
sensed again that God’s desires were greater than the challenge. She
drove to the San Gabriel Mountains and found what she believed was a
perfect location. The man who owned it hadn't been inclined to sell it,
but the prayers and faith of Miss Mears closed the deal. This beautiful
sight became Forest Home, one of the premier spiritual conference
centers in the country.
Henrietta then became frustrated by not having a good single volume
introduction to the Bible that could help her students understand what
it was all about, so she wrote one herself that sold hundreds of
thousands of copies and continues to sell today, decades after her
death.
She did all these things and many more despite doing them in a day when
many people thought a woman had no business doing such things. Time and
again she took the step of faith and time and again the bridge was
there. Did I mention that in addition to the hundreds of lives she
touched, she greatly influenced Billy Graham, Bill Bright and former
Senate Chaplain Richard Halverson?
All of the above mentioned was enough for me to choose this amazing
woman as a profile of courage; yet the moment of her life that caught my
attention and arrested my spiritual senses the most, was the final
moment of her life. At the end of her remarkable life, as she lay on her
deathbed, someone asked her, “Miss Mears, if you had it to do over
again, would you do anything differently?" She thought for a moment
before replying, "If I had it all to do over again, I would have trusted
Christ more."
A
powerful exhortation from a woman who by faith with actions, brought
about astounding accomplishments. Maybe God is calling you to trust Him
at some point of frustration in your life? This one thing we can be sure
of, no one ever regretted trusting Christ more -- ever!
